Quaker Burial Ground
(The Pleasance, Edinburgh)

The Quaker burial ground is tucked away in a courtyard in The Pleasance, in the part belonging to Edinburgh University. The burial ground consists of walled grassy area with some twenty-seven headstones in a neat row against the south wall.

Above is the headstone of William Miller (1796-1882). He was a line-engraver and executed plates for many of the Scottish landscape artists including DO Hill, Horatio MacCulloch and Sir George Harvey but his chief works were his transcripts from Turner.

There's  now also a photographic record (in colour) of all the headstones that were in the
Quaker Burial Ground when I visited in June 2005.  Click here to visit.
