The view from Old Calton Cemetery looking
towards Calton Hill. The cemetery was split in
two by the construction of Waterloo Place in 1818, some of the
graves were moved to New Calton Cemetery,
whilst a small section was cut
adrift on the other side of the road.
Beside the monument of David Hume
(1711-76) stands the life-size statue of President Abraham
Lincoln in memory of five Scotsmen who died in the American
Civil War.

Above, enclosed by iron railings, is the unmarked
grave of Sir John Steell(1804-91). Sir John was responsible
for many of the statues you see today in the centre of Edinburgh -
Sir Walter Scott beneath his monument in Princes Street, The Duke
Of Wellington opposite the Balmoral Hotel, Prince Albert in
Charlotte Square and many more.
On either side of the the memorial to John Morton (died
1739 aged 61), stands two well rounded ladies - symbolising
the fruitfulness of the Word of God.
