Like so many other private cemeteries in Edinburgh, North Merchiston was allowed to fall into disrepair until eventually the City of Edinburgh acquired it under a compulsory purchase order in 1994. I would estimate that as many as half of the monuments have toppled over whilst in other areas only the occasional headstone can be seen. 
 A lonely soul sits reading amongst the autumn leaves, the inscription reads :
