Newington Cemetery (formerly Echo Bank)

Like so many other private cemeteries in Edinburgh, Newington was allowed to fall into disrepair until the city council was forced to step in and place a compulsory purchase order on it.

In places the vegetation is so thick that it is impossible to walk and in the few areas that have been cleared it appears that some headstones have also been tidied away.

A single white cross stands out alone, many more memorials lie hidden in the undergrowth.

The inscription reads :

Erected by his brother, sisters
and Numerous Friends
In Loving Memory of
James Anderson
who died at 9 Dick Place
Edinburgh
August 10th, 1913.

Near the entrance on Dalkeith Road is the Jewish section, this became the main Jewish burial ground in Edinburgh once the cemetery in Sciennes House Place was full. When Newington became fully utilised a plot of ground was purchased at Piershill Cemetery.

There's  now also a photographic record of most of the headstones in the Jewish Section of Newington at www.newingtoncmy.fsnet.co.uk made during 2003.
