Grange Cemetery (1846)

The Grange Cemetery lies close to the Meadows where in former times the city reputedly buried its plague victims.

John Henry Campbell

The headstone on the left carries the likeness of John Henry Campbell (1847-78), the facial hair and weathering of the stone giving him the appearance of someone much older than his 31 years.

Memorial with palm
One of the strangest monuments I've come across, complete with palm.

Charlotte Hill

The headstone above marks the grave of Charlotte Hill who died in 1862, she was the only child of the landscape painter and pioneer photographer D O Hill (1802-70) who is buried in the Dean Cemetery.

Ivan Szabo (1822-58), Photographer.

The Grange is also the resting place of the pioneer photographer, Ivan Szabo (1822-58). Amongst those who sat for him was one William Henry Fox Talbot, for more information on Ivan Szabo go to Peter Stubb's excellent site on the History of Photography in Edinburgh.

James Cappie M.D.

The inscription on the memorial above reads :

served his generation with eminent skill
and generous and untiring devotion

Born 29th May 1829
