East Preston Street Cemetery

In 1819 the small cemetery of Buccleuch Parish Church was declared by the authorities to be overcrowded and so in 1820 two and a half acres of ground was purchased by the Kirk Session of St Cuthberts from a Mr. Handyside for £1800 in order to build East Preston Street Cemetery.

Below is a detail from the Ronaldson memorial which stands at the corner of East Preston Street and Dalkeith Road which was erected by Alexander and William Ronaldson, "to the memory of their Mother, Father, Sister and Brother, and to other Dear Friends whose remains are interred in and near to this place.".

The tomb above was erected by the Relief Church, South College Street in memory of their pastor, the Rev. William Limont, who died in 1833.

The graveyard appears to be permanently locked. I only managed to take these photographs because of building work that was being carried out on nearby tenements and access was required by the builders.
